CloudBerry Backup

MSP360, formerly CloudBerry Lab, is a software and application service provider company that develops online backup, remote desktop and file management products integrated with more than 20 cloud storage providers.MSP360 Backup and MSP360 Explorer are offered for personal use in a “freemium” model. Other products, including more advanced MSP360 Backup versions, are sold per license with. Speaking of that, CloudBerry only provides the backup solution. Buying or renting the actual storage is up to you. So, if the license price is “one time fees” per computer— you have to add the storage price to estimate the total cost of ownership of that solution.

This chapter covers the following topics:

  • Enable or Disable Backup of On-Demand Files.

On-Demand Files in OneDrive

OneDrive On-Demand files help you to access all your files in OneDrive without downloading them and usingstorage space on your Windows device.

OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive) is an online Microsoft cloud service. OneDrive is integrated with Windows 10 as a default location for saving user files. This allows the saving of photos and any other files across multiple devices.

A user can also save their files in OneDrive and have them automatically synchronized on other devices. This means someone can access and work on the same document in multiple locations.

Once Files On-Demand is enabled, you see all your files in a file manager. New files created online or on another device appear as available online-only files, which do not take up space on your device. Once your PC is connected to the Internet, you can use the files like every other file on your device.

On-Demand File Backup

Starting from version 6.3, Backup for Windows enables On-Demand file backups.

How It Works

If On-Demand files backup is disabled, as a backup plan runs, On-Demand files that available online only (Unpinned) will be downloaded from your OneDrive storage, then uploaded to backup storage specified in the backup plan. After these files are backed up, they will be marked with an Unpinned attribute which means that these files are available online. Locally stored files (with Pinned attribute) will be backed up in any case.

While downloading On-Demand files from the OneDrive cloud, a maximum downloading period is set for each file to be downloaded. These periods are calculated separately for each file. A period is calculated as a ratio of file size to 10 Mbps speed. For example, a downloading period for a file 200 Mb is approximately 2 minutes

If a file is not downloaded within the calculated period, an error occurs (Code: 1614. Cannot back up n OneDrive On-Demand files. Download timeout)

If the VSS snapshot mechanism is used (can be specified on, On-Demand file are processed as regular, so that is, the file is taken from the OneDrive folder and is uploaded to backup storage. On-Demand files are not taken from a VSS snapshot

Enable/Disable On-Demand File Backup

You can manage On-Demand file backup settings on the Advanced Filter step of the backup wizard. By default, On-Demand files are not backed up. To back up On-Demand files, proceed as follows:

  1. Edit the required backup plan.
  2. Follow the backup wizard to the Advanced Filter step.
  1. Disable the Do not back up On-Demand files check box.
  2. Finish the backup wizard to save the configuration.

As opposed to a full backup which uploads a complete copy of each file to a storage, a block-level backup uploads the full copy of your data only during the first execution of the backup plan and when explicitly forced to do this. In other cases, the backup service uploads only blocks (parts of a file) that were modified since the last backup date, which can dramatically decrease the processing time required for completing your backup routine, as well as reduce the required storage space. However, unlike incremental backup, a block-level backup only uploads modified portions of files instead of uploading a full copy of each file that has been modified since the last backup was made.

The backup service decides whether a file needs to be updated based on its modification date. If a file was modified after it has been uploaded to a backup storage, the backup service breaks this file into blocks and then checks whether the hash string at the beginning of each block is different from that of the latest full version of this file stored in a backup. On finding any mismatch in block hashes, the corresponding portion of a file is uploaded to the storage.

The block size varies for different kind of backup data. When using a block-level file backup, the block size depends on the file size:

Cloudberry Backup

  • The block size equals 128 kB if a file size is less than 512 GB.
  • The block size equals 256 kB if a file size is less than 1024 GB.
  • The block size equals 512 kB if a file size exceeds 1024 GB.

The block size equals 1 MB for an image-based, Microsoft Exchange and VMware backup.

When performing a block-level backup, you can schedule a full backup as well, to be able to purge outdated file versions according to the current retention policy settings. The backup service cannot delete a previous file version unless a newer full backup is uploaded to the storage, because this version is used for restoring the file.

You can manually force a full backup at any time by clicking the corresponding command under the backup plan entry on the Backup Plans tab of your application.

For this reason, block-level backup may become unavailable when using certain storage providers as a destination for your backups.
